- HOMO and LUMO

HOMO stands for Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital, which means the highest energy level among the orbitals occupied by electrons. On the other hand, LUMO stands for Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital, which means the lowest energy level among the orbitals that are not filled by electrons. These two can be easily found through a diagram.

HOMO and LUMO are related to the color of the molecule. The closer the HOMO and LUMO are to each other, the easier it is for the electrons in the HOMO to be excited to the LUMO by receiving energy. Therefore, this can be used to determine whether or not the molecule has a color, and what color it will have.
